PHOENIX (December 11, 2019) – The Maricopa County Air Quality Department (MCAQD) is pleased to announce it has chosen five organizations as the 2019 program year State Clean Diesel Grant Program subaward recipients. The State Clean Diesel Grant Program is part of the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) funded through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
MCAQD administers the Environmental Protection Agency’s DERA State Clean Diesel Grant Program, which is designed to improve air quality by reducing diesel emissions. The DERA program provides public and private organizations within Maricopa County, that have fleets, with assistance in replacing their older diesel vehicles for newer, cleaner fuel burning vehicles. This year the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) provided matching funds for the grant program.
“We are excited to collaborate with a diverse mix of subaward recipients this program year,” said Philip McNeely, MCAQD Director. “Partnering with private organizations such as Sysco Food Corporation and Waste Management of Arizona allows us to achieve diesel emissions reductions among vehicles that drive many miles throughout the work week, thereby making the air cleaner for County residents.”
An agreement with Sysco Food Corporation will provide up to $262,500 in funds to replace one 1999, one 2000, three 2001, and five 2002 model year diesel Class 8 short haul combination trucks with 2020 new cleaner diesel technology trucks. Matching funds of 75% will be provided by Sysco Corporation.
An agreement with Waste Management of Arizona, Inc. will provide up to $168,000 in funds to replace one 2001, one 2005, and two 2008 model year diesel refuse haulers with new 2020 near-zero-emission compressed natural gas (CNG) heavy duty refuse trucks. Matching funds of 81% will be provided by Waste Management of Arizona, Inc.
An agreement with Agua Fria Union High School District #216 will provide up to $84,481 in funds to replace two 2005 model year diesel school buses with two new 2020 ultra-low sulfur diesel buses. Matching funds of 75% will be provided by Agua Fria Union High School District #216.
An agreement with the Avondale Elementary School District #44 will provide up to $120,000 in funds to replace two 2006 and one 2009 model year diesel school buses with three new 2019 ultra-low sulfur diesel buses. Matching funds of 75% will be provided by Avondale Elementary School District #44.
Lastly, an agreement with the Dysart Unified School District #89 will provide up to $115,500 in funds to replace two 2006 and one 2002 model year diesel school buses with three new 2019 ultra-low sulfur diesel buses. Matching funds of 75% will be provided by Dysart Unified School District #89.
