Maricopa County Public Health Investigating TB Case at Local Hospital

PHOENIX (April 26, 2019)--Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) is working closely with HonorHealth to investigate a possible case of Tuberculosis (TB) at its Scottsdale Shea facility.

“We have not been able to confirm the diagnosis, but because TB cannot be ruled out, we are recommending that exposed patients at high risk be offered preventive treatment to protect them from severe disease,” said Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine, medical director for Disease Control for Maricopa County Department of Public Health.

Out of an abundance of caution for patients that could be at risk, MCDPH has made the recommendation that patients who have been exposed receive a TB evaluation and if appropriate, preventive treatment. To date, MCDPH has reached out to all patients at risk and provided information and options for testing and accessing preventive treatment if deemed appropriate.

Individuals who have spent time at this facility and have not heard from MCDPH have not been determined to be at risk from this exposure. MCDPH is not recommending that they be tested for TB.

For more information on TB, please visit the CDC.
