[ARCHIVED] White Tank Mountain Regional Park Temporarily Closes Waterfall Trail for Renovations

Maricopa County Seal for Web Use

Effective October 17, White Tank Mountain Regional Park’s Waterfall Trail and trailhead will close for renovations. The closure is expected to last approximately three weeks while a crew installs a hard surface concrete base, applies a rock salt finish, and dyes the new trail to match the natural desert landscape.

“The Waterfall Trail is the most popular and frequently hiked barrier-free trail in the park system,” stated Maricopa County Supervisor Clint Hickman, District 4. This short trail accommodates approximately 150,000 visitors each year! In 2007, the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department installed a compact granite base on the trail to make it easier for individuals using wheelchairs, assistive walking devices and strollers to maneuver along the path. Over time, the material has eroded, and it is no longer feasible to try to repair the base.

“The community surrounding the park consists of a significant senior population and families with young children in strollers, so it is important for us to get the trail in pristine condition so they can enjoy the great outdoors during the cooler weather,” added Hickman.

During the closure, park visitors are encouraged to explore the many other trails within the park. With close to 65 miles of trails available in the park, visitors may discover a new favorite! In addition, the Black Rock Short Loop Trail near Area 4 is available for use, and meets the Barrier Free Guidelines.

“With temperatures cooling down, the park has added a variety of programs to their schedule. And, for those looking for a safe Halloween event, we invite you to join us for our Sonoran Spook-tacular Howl-o-Ween Fest in Area 4 on October 28 at 7 pm,” R.J. Cardin, Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department director added.

White Tank Mountain Regional Park is located at 20304 W. White Tank Mountain Road in Waddell. For additional information, visit
