Due to limited social security income, Cindy was unable to make necessary repairs to her home. Cindy’s home had a roof leak and there were also plumbing issues that caused flooring problems. Cindy was unable to access her bathtub and needed some modifications to make the bathing area accessible.
This was affecting Cindy’s life significantly in that she was constantly fearing that further rain would damage the home even more- making a big problem even worse. With difficulty accessing the bathing area – Cindy was at risk of injury navigating her way in that space. These issues were causing stress for Cindy.
Maricopa County Human Services, through the Housing and Community Development Division, was able to offer assistance. The Emergency Home Repair (EHR) Program was able to fix roof leaks, repair flooring in master bathroom and bedroom, and provide ADA accessibility by updating her bathroom and shower. Cindy’s home was also updated with a new HVAC system that also resolved other plumbing and air filtration issues.
Not only is Cindy able to stay in her home- she has a much safer environment. She is now able to fully access her bathroom and no longer needs to worry about moisture issues. As the summer heat approaches, Cindy is also able to be more comfortable with her new HVAC system.
What is interesting about this case is that it originally started as a weatherization application. This application was deemed a deferral due to needed repairs. EHR was able to help with the needed housing repairs which have enabled the application for weatherization services to now move forward with energy saving measures.
Cindy’s new, safer, and more comfortable home that will soon be more energy efficient is just one example of the many ways that the caring staff of the Housing and Community Development Division of the Maricopa County Human Services Department is making a meaningful difference in the lives of county residents.
