Elective Surgeries

Executive Order Delaying Elective Surgeries

On March 19, 2020, Governor Ducey issued Executive Order 2020-10, Delaying Elective Surgeries to Conserve Personal Protective Equipment Necessary to Test and Treat Patients with COVID-19. (E.O.2020-10). A non-essential or elective surgery means a surgery that can be delayed without undue risk to the current or future health of a patient.

Elective Surgery Exemption Process

On April 22, 2020, Governor Ducey issued Executive Order 2020-32, Requesting Exemption from E.O. 2020-10. In response, the Arizona Department of Health Services has established minimum criteria to resume elective, non-essential surgeries that hospitals, healthcare facilities, and providers (including dental surgery providers) must demonstrate in a request for exemption from E.O. 2020-10.

Those receiving an exemption from E.O. 2020-10 may begin these surgeries on or after May 1, 2020.

NOTE: A hospital, healthcare facility or provider who has received an exemption from E.O. 2020-10 is NOT eligible to request or receive PPE distributed by the state or county health departments.
