"Get Wet Beginner Kayaking" Program On-water Skills Course
Desert Outdoor Center
Have you ever wanted to give flat water lake kayaking a try? Well here is your chance. Lake Pleasant Regional Park, the Desert Outdoor Center, and Cabelas is once again presenting the "Get Wet Beginner Kayaking" program. The program starts with a free one hour informational classroom session held at the Glendale Cabelas on Friday evening (you will not get wet). You do not need to register to attend the classroom session.

Dates of free 1-hour classroom introductory sessions are: August 2, August 16, September 13

Then if you would like to experience flat-water kayaking on Lake Plesant, you may sign up for an on-the-water session that will be held at the Desert Outdoor Center at Lake Pleasant. The $40 registration fee for the on-the-water portion will be collected during the evening classroom session at Cabelas. Registration for on-the-water sessions begins at 6:00pm on a first come, first serve basis. Cash or check only please. Ages 12 & up, but if under 18 years then must be accompanied by an adult. Dates for 3-hour on-the-water sessions are: August 10, August 24, September 21 (choose from a 7AM or 9AM arrival time; sign up and pay at any of the Friday classes; on-water sessions fill up fast, so first come, first served)

PLEASE NOTE: The Desert Outdoor Center is a gated facility, so you must be registered to attend. Gates will be open 30 minutes before each session begins.

***There is no boat ramp access to launch a kayak at this facility, so please do not bring your personal kayaks. The boat dock is about a 1/4 mi down from the facility, so please be prepared for a short hike.

Bird Walk & bird themed movie following walk - Estrella
Estrella Mountain Park
Join knowledgeable folks from the Sonoran Audobon Society for an easy hike along the Gila River discovering the bird life of Estrella Park. Between the river habitat, mesquite bosque and nearby farm fields, and turf area, over 150 different species have been observed. We are likely to see up to 40 species, including: Herons, Egrets, Kingfishers, Osprey’s, Hawks, Ibis, and Stilts. When you think about it, everyone is a birdwatcher—you can do it wherever or whoever you are– it’s just more fun to know what they are. Meet at the Nature Center. Rain cancels event. Meet at the Nature Center after the bird walk to cool off and enjoy the bird themed movie 'The Big Year' following the walk. Movie will start approximately 9:30am. Call for additional details.

Bring your sandwich to the “Brown-Bag It” series inside our Nature Center as Ranger B shares some helpful information about this fun activity. Location: Nature Center.

Clay Mine Hike - Cave Creek Regional Park

Join us for adventure as we explore the Clay Mine! This will be an easy 2 mile hike (round trip). Once inside, we'll discuss the history of this mine and learn how its contents were used to "cure what ailed ya"! We'll supply the hard hats. You bring water, a flashlight, & sturdy shoes. Meet at the Nature Center parking lot and follow the signs to the mine. This is an "open house" format, so you may come and go at your convenience during the designated time slot. Last tour at 8:30, the mine will be closed promptly 9 pm.

Thank you for supporting Maricopa County Parks and Recreation.*** As the sun disappears into the mountains and night falls on the desert, allow your night vision to slowly adjust to glimpse over a beautiful desert night scene without the need of a flashlight. Enjoy the stunning display of stars shinning overhead without the interruption of city lights. Who knows, a few might even fall to the ground as we kick off the beginning of the Perseids Meteor Shower. Stay after and enjoy the Perseids Meteor Shower viewing at 9p.m. for no additional charge.

Scorpion Hunt - Spur Cross
Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area
August 10 Saturday 7:30 pm Spur Cross Scorpion Hunt (easy) Did you know that scorpions glow in the dark under a blacklight? Join Ranger Kevin as he leads us on this fun and safe night walk to find these elusive desert dwellers (using our eyes only). You will learn cool facts about these amazing creatures and sharpen your spotting skills! All ages will enjoy this casual one-hour/one-mile walk. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring water and a flashlight (blacklights are especially helpful). No pets please. NOTE: This program is part of the “County Parks are getting Wet ‘n’ Wild this Summer” promotion. At the end of the program, we will give away a free family four-pack (4 free tickets to the Wet ‘n’ Wild Water Park)

Summer Night Ride Series
McDowell Mountain Regional Park
The summer night mountain bike series will be held on Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. All riders must have a helmet, a lighting system designed for mountain biking and battery power for 3 hours of riding. Riders must sign-in and sign-out, two hours are allowed to ride the Pemberton Trail. It is highly recommended that you ride this trail in day light before coming out for a night ride. The sign sheets are available at 6:30 for riders who might need extra time. NO RIDERS WILL BE ALLOWED TO START AFTER 8:00 p.m.

Perseids Meteor Shower Viewing - San Tan

It’s the biggest meteor shower of the year and San Tan wants you to keep your eyes on the skies.
