Basics of Bird Watching - Usery Park

Interested about getting into bird watching but don’t know where to start? Want to know which bird is which and how to spot them? Join bird expert, Sandy Hornbaker, for this introduction to bird watching as she guides you on a quarter-mile stroll along our Desert Hawk Trail. Bring binoculars if you have them, otherwise, Sandy has some to loan. Please bring water and closed-toe shoes. Location: Nature Center.

Mobile Phone Wildflower Photography Workshop– McDowell Mtn Regional Park

Most of the photos that get posted to McDowell Mountain Park’s Facebook page were taken on Ranger Amy’s iPhone. It’s amazing what you can capture with the camera you are already carrying around in your pocket. Learn how to make the most of your megapixels with just a few lessons in composition and style. And what better setting to learn photographic technique than in a beautiful natural park setting! Wear comfortable walking shoes, dress appropriately, and bring a smartphone with photo-taking abilities and the photo application(s) of your choice for this hands-on workshop. Meet at the North Trail.

"Just for Kids" - Kid vs. Wild - Usery Park
Usery Mountain Regional Park
Kids, what would you do if you got lost in the desert? This fun program will teach you what to do! You will learn how to find your way, signal for help, build an emergency shelter, and avoid desert dangers. This program involves a 1-mile hike and is designed for kids ages 7-12. Kids must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring water, hats, and closed-toe shoes. Location: Area 6.

Archery 101 - San Tan ***REGISTRATION FULL***
San Tan Mountain Regional Park
*****Registration for this class is full. If you would like, you can show up the day of the class to fill any empty spots on a first come first serve basis.***** Maricopa County Parks and Recreation and Arizona Game and Fish are excited to get you behind the bow with a fun introduction to archery. Ages 8 and up are welcome to participate in the fun and safe sport of International Target Style Archery. This is a great way to get involved with this amazing sport and best of all; we will provide all the equipment. All you need to do is reserve a spot by calling 480.655.5554 or emailing Ranger Adam at adammartell@mail.maricopa.gov, then show up and let the fun begin. Adults are welcome to participate too. For those who completed our “Archery 101” class, this class will take you to the next level! Participants will learn about field target archery, discover how to improve their accuracy, and enjoy some friendly competition. Equipment will be provided. Participants must be graduates of our “Archery 101” class. This class is open to ages 8 and up. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring water, hats, and closed-toe shoes. Wildflowers, where are you? - Estrella Mountain Regional Park
Estrella Mountain Park
Join Ranger Amy on an easy walk on the Gila Trail. The Gila trail is a 0.5-mile barrier free trail that offers nice views of the Estrella Mountains. This easy walk will provide you with a up-close look at the beautiful desert, without the worry of the unknown. This trail is wheelchair accessible. Wildflower sightings are not guaranteed, but enjoying a spring morning in the park is! Meet at the Gila Trailhead.

Desert Plant Adaptation - Library Series
White Tank Mountains Regional Park
March 16 – 11:00 am – Sonoran Plants Adaptation, Library Series – Learn how the trees and flowers of the Sonoran Desert survive the harsh climate of the desert southwest. What are the symbiotic relationships that are necessary for that survival. This is part of the Park/Library education series. The event will be held in the Library Classroom and there will be a short walk on the Mule Deer Trail during the class.

"Wonderful World of Plants!" - Cave Creek Regional Park

***SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER, JOE FORD*** This program looks at the major plant families and describes characteristics of their flowers: unusual and important information about some major species. The 6 largest families,(sunflowers, orchids, legumes, grasses, mustards and roses) are highlighted. A discussion of deserts in America and especially the Sonoran Desert are emphasized. Familiar members of the Cactus Family, including the saguaro, prickly pear, & cholla are included in the information along with other plants that use several survival strategies to thrive in desert ecosystems. This is a power point presentation. ***Joe is a native of Missouri. He holds several degrees in education and a Masters Degree in Natural Science from the University of Oklahoma. He has been an educator on the junior high, high school and college levels. After 42 years in the teaching field he retired to Sun City, Arizona. He is a board member in the Sonoran Audubon Society and a member of the Sun City Rockhounds, among many of his other interests.

Full Egg Moon Hike and live OWL Encounter - McDowell
McDowell Mountain Regional Park
Join Ranger Amy and Liberty Wildlife to experience the desert “come alive” by the light of the moon at McDowell Mountain Regional Park. Liberty Wildlife will be here at the beginning of the hike (6:00-6:45pm) with LIVE OWLS to talk about these beautiful nighttime creatures. The hike, immediately following, will be 2 hours in length. Liberty will be accepting donations at this event of toilet paper, wild bird seed, and dry dog or cat food, to help them stock up for the upcoming baby bird season! Flashlights are not necessary, but permitted. Bring plenty of water and sturdy shoes. Hiking time is 2 hours, and 3 miles. No pets please. Children should be comfortable hiking 3 miles. Hikes begin at the Trailhead Staging area. Moonlit hike programs are free with $6/vehicle entry to the Park.

STARGAZING -Spring Sky Event
Desert Outdoor Center
Lions, Snakes and Bears up in the sky, Oh My! Join the staff of the Desert Outdoor Center at Lake Pleasant for the Spring Sky Stargazing event on Saturday, March 16th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Adults and children alike will enjoy peering through telescopes and learning about constellations, planets, star clusters and nebulas from our astronomy expert, Tony LaConte, from Stargazing for Everyone. The program lasts approximately two hours and attendees are encouraged to bring binoculars, telescopes, lawn chairs and blankets for comfort. Food and beverages are available for purchase. Park entrance opens at 6:30 p.m. The Desert Outdoor Center at Lake Pleasant is located at 41402 N. 87th Avenue in Peoria (just east of Lake Pleasant Regional Park).
