2012 Xterra Arizona Trail Run Series

Please note that the Scenic Trail will be closed to the public for duration of the trail race. The 2011-2012 XTERRA Arizona Trail Run Series is coming to an end this weekend at McDowell Mountain Regional Park. With it comes idyllic weather, awe inspiring scenery, and the perfect opportunity to pre-burn your Super Bowl caloric consumption. Don't miss out on being a part of this awesome inaugural series. Each age group series winner receives not only bragging rights, but also a free entry into the XTERRA Trail Run National Competition in September.

Horses, Gold and Critters Oh My! - Cave Creek Regional Park
Cave Creek Regional Park
Get your boots on and come on out to Cave Creek Trailrides! Get a hands on “Old West” experience within our 3 Exploration Stations, where you will gain knowledge and connect as a group! Station 1 provides a great introduction to the world of horses from anatomy and feeding to cost of ownership and tack! At Station 2 you’ll receive basic riding instruction and be introduced to your own horse for a scenic trail ride through Cave Creek Regional Park. Last, at Station 3 the Ranger will introduce you to the unique critters that call the Sonoran Desert home and you will also get the chance to try your hand at gold panning while learning about the rich mining history of the area. This program is geared towards girl scouts (grades 4-5) earning a Horse Rider or Fan Badge. Advanced registration is required. Find the Ranger - Wind Cave Trail - Usery Park
Usery Mountain Regional Park
This open-house style program features our ranger hiking along the Wind Cave Trail and stopping to talk to park visitors. Our ranger will show off his “Backpack of Knowledge” and be available to answer questions about the park, discuss park history, identify desert plants, or even explain which animals call Usery Park "home". Carry ample water.

Discovering Desert Edibles Walk - Usery Park

How have people survived off the land for thousands of years? Which desert plants are edible and when are they edible? If you would like to know the answers to these questions, or any questions you may have about desert edibles, then this walk is for you! Join Ranger B on this quarter-mile stroll along the Desert Hawk Trail as he shares some useful facts about our edible desert plants. Please bring water. Location: Nature Center.

Tails on Trails - Dog Fitness Hike (Beginners Level) - Usery Park
Usery Mountain Regional Park
Fit dogs are happier, healthier, and display fewer behavioral problems. Tails on Trails will provide the opportunity to meet other dog hikers, learn safe hiking practices and dog trail etiquette. The fun, 1-mile hike along the level Merkle Trail is great for beginner hiker dogs. Please bring a short non-extendable leash, a small cleanup bag, and water for you and your dog. One dog per hiker, please. After completing this hike, you and your dog will be ready for our “Experienced Level” Dog Fitness Hike! Location: Area 6.

Rocks and Streams Walk - Spur Cross
Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area
February 5 Sunday 2:00 pm Rocks and Streams Walk (moderate) Learn about the geology and streams of the Spur Cross region on a 2-hour walk with nationally-known earth science author, Thomas McGuire. Visit an abandoned gold mine, Nutcracker Rock and a Hohokam rock art site along Cottonwood Wash. Bring water and your natural curiosity. Meet in the Spur Cross parking area.

Full Moon Hike - San Tan
San Tan Mountain Regional Park
As the sun sets behind the mountains and the trails close for the day, we will set out into the desert for an afterhours adventure. Slowly your eyes will adjust to the darkness and soon the light from the full moon will illuminate a wilderness seldom seen. Flashlights are recommended on this 2.2mile hike on the Stargazer Trail.
