FALL TRAIL WORK - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
McDowell Mountain Regional Park
Sauturday, October 20th between 7:00am and 10:00am, work will be done on the Competitive Track. Now that the monsoons seem to be over, we can get out and make some needed repairs. Jeremy Graham, Race Director for the 12/24 Hours of Fury has offered a discount of 25% on your registration fee to anyone who comes out and works the 3 hours on Saturday, 10-20-12. Meet in the Comp Track parking lot before 7 am.

MUD, SWEAT & BEERS - EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Do you love a good mud bath in the morning? How about a beer as a complete part of your nutritious breakfast? Enlist today for the running of the 2nd Annual Mud, Sweat & Beers and enjoy plenty of both! If you think that you and your fellow recruits can maneuver through four miles of muddy obstacles then toast your accomplishment with a frosty brew at the finish line! COURSE Beginning and ending at the Four Peaks Staging area of McDowell Mountain Regional Park recruits can expect a four mile course, with six obstacles to navigate and a mud pit to finish. RECRUIT AMENITIES Event t-shirt Finisher medal to each of the few and the proud who complete their training Post race frosty brew WAVE START Recruits will start in three waves based on their abilities. Each recruit chooses for him or herself the wave to start in. 1) Seal Team Six The best of the best, these folks are in it to win it. (35 minutes or better for 4 miles without obstacles) 2) Infantry Battle hardened and proven, these men and women are the backbone of Mud, Sweat and Beers (35 - 45 minutes for 4 miles without obstacles) 3) Doughboys Fresh meat, these recruits are here for the beer! (45+ minutes for 4 miles without obstacles) COST: Prior to midnight October 1 Individual $50 Platoon of four $180 Prior to 6:00pm October 18th Individual $60 Platoon of four $220 AWARDS Overall awards for will be given to the top 3 male and female finishers. Age group awards will be awarded to the top 3 male and female finishers. PARK ENTRY There is a $6 entry fee per vehicle that must be paid at the main entrance to the park.

Elephant Mountain Fortress Hike - Spur Cross
Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area
October 20 Saturday 8:00 am Elephant Mountain Fortress Hike (strenuous) Join us for a 7 mile / 5 hour roundtrip trek into the backcountry to one of the premier archaeological sites in the conservation area. Participants need to be in good condition and familiar with what hiking on primitive trails for this distance entails. Participants must bring at least one liter of water. We recommend you have a hat, & dress in layers. No dogs on this hike please.

QuickStart Your Canoe -Beginner Flatwater Canoeing
Desert Outdoor Center
If you've ever wanted to go canoeing but did't have the necessary skills, then QuickStart Your Canoe is the perfect training for you. This American Canoe Association course is designed to introduce the beginning paddler to basic canoe skills & knowledge so that you can enjoy the sport of tandem canoeing on flat water.

Everyone is invited to come to Cabela’s® (in Glendale) on Friday evening for an informational classroom session that is free to everyone. You do NOT neeed to register to attend the classroom session. We will discuss types of canoes, paddles, canoeing gear and safety tips. You will not get wet during the classroom session.

If you wish to participate in the 4-hour on-water paddle session at Lake Pleasant, arrive at 6:00pm on Friday to register for Saturday’s water session. You must attend the classroom session to participate in the on-water session. The registration fee for the on-the-water portion is $40 and class size is limited, so arrive early. Cash or check only please.

PLEASE NOTE: The Desert Outdoor Center is a gated facility, so you must be registered to attend. Gates will be open 30 minutes before each session begins. ***There is no boat ramp access to launch a boat at this facility, so please do not bring your personal watercraft. The boat dock is about a 1/4 mi down from the facility, so please be prepared for a desert hike.

Ages 8 and up are welcome to participate in the fun and safe sport of International Target Style Archery. October 20 Saturday 9:00 am Rocks and Streams Walk (moderate) Learn about the geology and streams of the Spur Cross region on a 2-hour walk with nationally-known earth science author, Thomas McGuire. Visit an abandoned gold mine, Nutcracker Rock and a Hohokam rock art site along Cottonwood Wash. Bring water and your natural curiosity. Meet in the Spur Cross parking area.

Meet our baby tortoises, desert blonde tarantula and giant desert hairy scorpion. One lucky family will win a four pack of Wet 'n' Wild Tickets! Feeding takes place at the Visitor Center.

It’s dinner time at San Tan and our snakes have an appetite that can only be described as “striking.” Watch as the Snakes and Gila Monster, inside the visitor center, stretch their jaws and swallow their prey whole. Feel free to ask the ranger questions and learn some “rattling” new facts about reptiles. (Please note that this event will feature snakes eating pre-killed mice and may not be suitable for all ages.)

Goofy Ghost Walk - Usery Park
Usery Mountain Regional Park
Ghosts of all ages are invited to kick off the Halloween season with this fun night walk! Decorate a bed sheet at home and wear it for this quarter-mile journey through the dark desert. Our “Ghost Rangers” will judge the best child, teen, and adult homemade bed sheet costumes. We will also enjoy free snacks and drinks, play some fun games, then listen to Ranger B’s funny-spooky stories around the bonfire in our amphitheater. Please bring a flashlight and closed-toe shoes. Groups call ahead, and no pets please. Location: Nature Center.
