Competitive Track will be CLOSED
McDowell Mountain Regional Park
A mountain bike race held on the Competitive Track Saturday and Sunday, October 12th and 13th will close the area to non-participating park visitors.

Bird Walk - Estrella
Estrella Mountain Park
Join knowledgeable folks from the Sonoran Audobon Society for an easy hike along the Gila River discovering the bird life of Estrella Park. Between the river habitat, mesquite bosque and nearby farm fields, and turf area, over 150 different species have been observed. We are likely to see up to 40 species, including: Herons, Egrets, Kingfishers, Osprey’s, Hawks, Ibis, and Stilts. When you think about it, everyone is a birdwatcher—you can do it wherever or whoever you are– it’s just more fun to know what they are. Meet at the Nature Center. Rain cancels event.

Archery 101 - Usery Park
Usery Mountain Regional Park
Interested in archery? Curious about how to shoot a bow? Come to Usery Park and find out! You will discover how fun archery really is! Participants will experience a fun and safe introduction to recreational and international-style target archery. Equipment will be provided. This class is open to anyone ages 8 and up. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring water, hats, and closed-toe shoes. Meet at the Archery Range. 8:30-10:00am

Rock Art of Spur Cross
Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area
October 12 Saturday 9:00 am Rock Art of Spur Cross (moderate) The petroglyphs found in Spur Cross were created hundreds of years ago by the Hohokam people. Come and walk in their footsteps as we visit a few of the more impressive sites in the park during this two-hour hike. No dogs on this hike please.

Bird Weirdness - Estrella
Estrella Mountain Park
Special guest speaker Joe Ford shares many unusual facts about some common bird species found worldwide. Why did the passenger pigeon become extinct? What is the most numerous bird in the world? What method does the cowbird, who never makes a nest, use to insure the success of its offspring? Why did brown pelicans all but disappear from Louisiana in the middle of the 20th Century? Flamingos, parrots, invasive starlings, storks, and screamers are just some of the birds discussed in this program. Biological magnification, sexual dimorphism, ecological connections are all part of this presentation. Presentation will be at the Nature Center.

STARGAZING -Meteor Shower Event
Desert Outdoor Center
Join the staff of the Desert Outdoor Center at Lake Pleasant for the fall Meteor Shower event on Saturday, October 12th from 7:00 p.m. to 9 p.m. Adults and children alike will enjoy peering through telescopes and learning about constellations, planets, star clusters and nebulas from our astronomy expert, Tony LaConte, from Stargazing for Everyone. The program lasts approximately two hours and attendees are encouraged to bring binoculars, telescopes, lawn chairs and blankets for comfort. Food and beverages are available for purchase. Park entrance opens at 6:30 p.m. The Desert Outdoor Center at Lake Pleasant is located at 41402 N. 87th Avenue in Peoria (just east of Lake Pleasant Regional Park).
