Beginning March 16, 2016 all of Maricopa County’s properties will be entirely tobacco-free. The idea behind the tobacco-free policy has been promoted for years and is now being officially implemented. Extensive research supports that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke and in the welfare of our employees we have decided to promote an entirely tobacco-free environment.

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable illness and death in the United States. It causes many different cancers as well as chronic lung diseases such as emphysema and bronchitis, heart disease, pregnancy-related problems, and many other serious health problems.

Maricopa County offers two tobacco cessation programs, at no cost, to employees enrolled in a County-sponsored medical plan. Additionally, Maricopa County offers medical premium reductions for tobacco-free employees as well as eligible tobacco users who want to quit. You can learn more about these programs and incentives on the Stop Using Tobacco page.

Message from Tom Manos

The American Cancer Society started the Great American Smokeout campaign in the 1970s and we have come a long way in the last four decades. I smoked cigarettes when I was younger and struggled to give it up. I can attest nicotine is not an easy thing to quit. That is why Maricopa County has programs to help our employees kick the habit. We also want to protect our non-smoking employees from secondhand smoke.

On March 16th, 2016 employees can Breathe Easy as county properties go tobacco free. This means no cigarettes, cigars, pipes, electronic cigarettes, or smokeless tobacco on our main campus and most other buildings housing county operations.

This website has been created to provide employees and managers with information about this policy change. Read the policy and please look at the “frequently asked questions” that apply to you.

After the first of the year, you will start to see new signs on county buildings regarding our tobacco free properties. Please help us get the word out ahead of this change for the better so we can all Breathe Easy.
