November 2008 School District Elections

Dr. Dowling is happy to provide the Maricopa County School Districts with the following links as a resource for the November 2008 School District election.

Notice Regarding School Board Election Cancellations

On Friday, September 12, 2008 the Maricopa County Superintendent of Schools will ask the County Board of Supervisors to cancel the elections for those districts that qualify pursuant to A.R.S. § 15-424 (D). (If only one person files or no person files a nominating petition or nomination paper for a write-in candidate for an election to fill a district office, the board of supervisors no earlier than seventy-five days before the election may cancel the election for the position and appoint the person who filed the nominating petition to fill the position. If no person files a nominating petition for an election to fill a district office, the board of supervisors no earlier than seventy-five days before the election may cancel the election for that office and that office is deemed vacant and shall be filled as provided in § 15-302. Several school district elections in Maricopa County qualify for this action, as reflected on the 2008 List of Requested Governing Board Election Cancellations which is on file with the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors and included in the board materials. A person who is appointed pursuant to this subsection is fully vested with the powers and duties of the office as if elected to that office.)

Anyone running for these offices must have submitted a statutory amount of signatures to have their name placed on the official ballot no later than August 6, 2008. Anyone interested in running as a write-in candidate must complete and file the Write in Nomination Paper with the Maricopa County Superintendent of Schools’ Office no later than 5:00PM on September 11, 2008.

Update 09/12/2008 - The County Board of Supervisors did, in fact, cancel the qualifying elections. Following the canvass of the November 4, 2008 election, the Board of Supervisors will appoint those candidates who filed nomination petitions or write in nomination papers on or before September 11, 2008, to serve the specified terms as school district governing board members in these districts, terms to begin January 1, 2008. The beginning of the appointment process, for those seats in which no candidate filed has yet to be determined. The County Superintendent of Schools will appoint persons to the vacant seats.
