July 2003 Safety Tip

SUMMER SAFETY

July is a time for outdoor summer fun,...but remember to do everything Safely

First, lets talk about FIREWORKS.

Fireworks are illegal in Arizona. Check your local newspapers for times and locations of public displays. In locations where they are legal, you should purchase them from a reliable dealer and always read and follow label directions. Use fireworks outdoors only and have water handy. Never experiment or make your own fireworks. Light only one firework at a time.

Please remember the following:

  • Never re-light a "dud" firework, wait 15 to 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water
  • Never give fireworks to small children
  • Store fireworks in a cool dry place
  • Dispose of fireworks properly by soaking them in water and then disposing them in the trash
  • Never throw or point fireworks at other people
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket
  • Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers
  • The shooter should always wear eye protection and never have any part of the body over the firework

Many people, adults and children, needlessly get hurt using fireworks on the Fourth of July. The Fourth of July should be a family time of fun, enjoyment and exciting adventure. Please use Fireworks wisely and safely.

Second, Fire Safety - Why we all need to be more diligent this summer!

This summer, many areas where the public recreates, the conditions are very dry, reflecting the current drought. This year's Aspen Fire and last year's huge wildfires in Colorado and Arizona have brought to the world's attantion how fast and destructive fires can be, especially in these extremely dry conditions. Here in Maricopa County, the Parks and Recreation Department, has closed the County parks (please see their news release dated May 15, 2003) to fires until these hazardous dry conditions have improved. Please be careful!

Have a great, safe, and fire-free July 4th and summer!
