Kids and Mowers Don't Cut It!

Having a child anywhere near an operating walk-behind or riding mower is dangerous, says Egleston Children's Hospital at Emory University in Atlanta. Each year, approximately 7,800 children ages 14 and under are treated in emergency rooms for lawn mower-related injuries. Here are some tips to keep your family safe:
  • Keep children inside when you mow.
  • Never allow a child to ride on a riding mower, even if that child is accompanied by an adult.
  • Mow during the daylight hours when the grass is dry. Wet grass clogs the mower's exit chute and also presents a slippery surface for mower operators.
  • Never wear headphones while using a mower. They make it difficult to hear people's voices or emergency warnings.
