Off the Grid – this is the terminology used when a facility does not access power or other public utility sources. The Maricopa County Buckeye Hills Shooting Park is a new 50-acre shooting and training facility located within the 4500-acre Buckeye Hills Regional Park. The shooting park is divided into two separate facilities: a public range that will be operated by Maricopa County Parks and Recreation and a law enforcement training facility operated by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. This facility creates its own power through the use of available solar energy.
The solar farms consist of solar panels connected to two central locations with underground electrical distribution lines to all site improvements. Propane-powered generators provide backup for vital systems including security and fire suppression. Water is drawn from an on-site well.
Shooting parks have historically been known to contribute lead contamination in the immediate vicinity of the ranges due to the composition of ammunition. This project was specifically designed to retain all runoff from the range so that downstream water quality will not be compromised.
