To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the United States Air Force (USAF) this year, Maricopa Supervisor Max Wilson, who served in the USAF, has taped his Maricopa County Newsmakers TV program at Luke Air Force Base.
The half-hour program features an interview with base commander, Brigadier General Tom Jones, and two Crew Chiefs explain their inspections of planes in LAFB hangars. Historic footage illustrates facts about the base, which was instituted in 1941. Over 40,000 fighter pilots have been trained at the base in its 66-year history. The Air Force was created as its own branch of the military in 1947, hence, this year marks the 60th anniversary.
Supervisor Max Wilson is known for his staunch support of Luke Air Force Base. In fact, preserving the base is a strategic priority in Maricopa County’s Mission statement. Supervisor Wilson says, “Luke Air Force Base has military as well as economic value. It has international importance as the largest F-16 training base in the world and it greatly impacts the economy of Maricopa County in a positive way.”
