It's West Nile Virus Season

Spring has sprung! April’s showers have brought May flowers and plenty of mosquitoes. And with mosquitoes, comes the threat of West Nile virus.

West Nile virus is a serious and potentially deadly disease that is spread by mosquitoes that have become infected from feeding on infected birds.  Some individuals may have no symptoms or only mild ones, but a portion of our population will become seriously ill. This includes high fevers, headaches, paralysis, coma and sometimes death. Seniors, children and those with compromised immune systems are particularly susceptible to the virus.

In keeping with our message of public safety, I would like to encourage county residents to enjoy the spring, but to do so safely.  Maricopa County continues to work diligently to curb mosquitoes through extensive prevention efforts, but residents can make the biggest difference.  Here are some important ways to protect yourself and your community:

Around the House

  • Eliminate mosquito-breeding sites around your property by removing standing water in potted plants, tires, buckets and other containers.
  • Keep fountains and swimming pools properly operating and free from debris.
  • If you are leaving for extended periods of time, move or remove yard items that may hold water in the event of a storm.
  • Ensure window and door screens are in good shape.

Personal Protection

  • When outdoors, wear long sleeves and long pants to prevent mosquito bites.
  • Avoid outdoor activity before dawn and after dusk.
  • Wear mosquito repellant.
