Drug Discount Card
Keeping the residents of Maricopa County healthy has always been a high priority of the county. I have always felt that government should help by providing programs that promote healthy living in our communities. To this end, I was enthusiastic about asking my colleagues on the Board to support a prescription drug discount card. I am pleased to announce that we voted unanimously to implement the program in March and the cards should become available for use by April.
This program has been successfully piloted during the past year in ten counties across the country by the National Association of Counties (NACo). Now, the program is being used by 250 counties nationwide. The drug discount card allows individuals to save, on average, from 13-40% on generic and brand name prescriptions. Citizens do not have to fill out any lengthy forms, there is no qualifying and the County will provide the cards. Any adult can acquire one of these cards, which will be available throughout the County.
With the cost of healthcare on the rise, the effects will be felt by many card users. These are some of the benefits:
- The card is designed as a supplement to existing insurance, so if your insurance doesn’t cover a particular formulary drug, this card may.
- The card will also help offset the high cost of healthcare for the increasing population of our Medicare and Medicaid recipients. My parents are enthusiastic about using the card.
- The card can also be used for certain pet prescriptions.
