Maricopa County Public Health Reminds Residents to ‘Be Ready, Be Safe’

this September 11 at Emergency Preparedness Month Community Expo

Hosted By Fiesta Mall

Phoenix (Sept. 6, 2012) – Emergencies can be large scale like a community-wide power outage or smaller such as a house fire. How one deals with these emergencies as an individual and as a family can make all the difference. This September 11, as part of National Preparedness Month, Maricopa County Public Health is partnering with diverse community organizations who reach our most vulnerable populations to hold a one-day multi-cultural preparedness fair.

“Preparedness month gives us an opportunity to remind residents to take a minute and think about individual and family preparedness,” said Dr. Bob England, director of Maricopa County Public Health. “Have you checked your batteries in your smoke detectors? Do your kids know who to contact if they can’t reach at school? Do you have a family emergency plan? These are a few questions that our preparedness expo hopes to address.”

The event will be hosted by Fiesta Mall on Sept. 11, 201 from 3 -7pm.  Visitors can expect information tables, educational classes, FREE flu and Tdap vaccinations and much more.  Many of the classes will be taught in Spanish and in English and attendees who attend a class and visit at least six information booths will receive a free first aid kit. In addition, partners will offer information to the public in Asian, Spanish & English languages.

Although the event is FREE, visitors are encouraged to bring a pair of new socks to donate to Phoenix Rescue Mission for the homeless.

Partners include American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter, CareMore, City of Mesa Fire, Donor Network of Arizona, Asian Pacific Coalition in Action (APCA), Holistic Urgent Recovery Team (HURT), Community Preparedness Exercise and Fair (COMPEF), Arizona Commission for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing, Mexican Consulate, Guatemalan Consulate, Phoenix Rescue Mission, Fiesta Mall, Univision & Univision Radio.
