Fissures

Many areas of Maricopa County are impacted by fissures, subsidence or soils with high clay content.

On June 4, 2007, the Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS) released individual 1:250,000 scale, earth fissure planning maps of Maricopa County. The maps show all currently known earth fissures.

The AZGS is in the process of preparing highly detailed fissure maps to be completed area by area over the next few years. A few of these more detailed maps have recently become available and can be accessed on the AZGS website.

If you encounter earth fissures or believe that your property may be subject to fissures, you are advised to contact a professional engineer prior to construction to determine if corrective action is necessary.
