Welcome to Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area.

The newest addition to Maricopa Countys Regional Parks System, the conservation area encompasses 2,154 acres of diverse, rugged upper Sonoran Desert. The north Valley location contains fascinating archaeology sites and lush riparian areas along Cave Creek, which flows throughout the winter months. Remnants of early mining and ranching, from which the park gets its name, are still apparent in the park. This area is a must see for all wildflower lovers in the spring. The abundant vegetation present in the conservation area provides a rich habitat for a diverse assemblage of wildlife.

Wildflowers in the Park
Generous fall and winter precipitation in the desert foothills has resulted in a great herbaceous wildflower response and the wildflower season is now in full swing at Spur Cross. We invite you to hike the trails in the conservation area or join us for our guided wildflower walks in March and April. The initial flowering of herbaceous plants such as poppies and lupine are now being replaced by the mass flowering of perennials such as brittlebush and globe mallow.

Wildflowers currently in bloom
The flowers that can be seen by walking along the trails include fiddleneck, Coulter’s and Arizona`s lupine, filaree, combseed, small-flowered eucrypta, desert hyacinth, popcorn flower, bladderpod, owl clover, wild heliotrope, scorpionweed, Arizona fiesta flower, desert chia, desert anemone, Mexican poppy, scarlet bugler penstemon, desert marigold, desert chicory, red maids, rock daisy, mustard evening primrose, and yellow evening primrose.

Perennials in bloom include brittlebush, globe mallow, fairy duster, deer vetch, desert rhubarb, ocotillo, viguiera, and wild cucumber.

The strawberry hedgehog cacti are also beginning to flower at this time.
