5/26/2015 - Extended due to dry conditions. Please check back after Labor Day for updates.
Maricopa County's regional parks will initiate the annual fire ban. This includes banning the use of all campfire, fire pits and charcoal grills; however, it is still acceptable to use gas/propane grills in designated areas such as the ramada areas, semi-developed and developed camping sites, and along the shoreline at Lake Pleasant Regional Park. If the parks do not receive ample rain during the monsoon season, the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department may extend the fire ban to protect the parks resources and ensure visitor safety. Calling All Superheros-Free Comic Book Day!-Estrella
Estrella Mountain Park
All superheroes and caped crusaders are invited to join “Super Park Ranger” to help save the park, their communities and the world during Free Comic book Day on Saturday, May 1 between 9-10am. We will have some fun challenges for our young superheroes to overcome. These challenges will help them learn about the special powers they possess which they can use daily to set things right in the environment. We will meet Green Arrow who wants to clear up misunderstandings about the wild environment. Batman, Sub-Mariner and Spider Woman will have challenges about their own special areas that the kids will have fun conquering. Black Panther will present a contest about endangered species, while Green Lantern has a challenging course with energy information. Wonder Woman will need help with a challenge in the avian world of raptors. This is a fun way to get the kids out and active while learning things that can help save energy, water and our natural world. Each challenge will have comics and handouts. We will also have Eric Mengel a published comic book author and illustrator who will give a short lesson on how to draw comics. Free posters courtesy of Drawn To Comics will be given away. If you love comics, superheroes and the park put your super costume on and come out to the park. Anyone wearing a costume will get a special prize. There are many events afterwards at venues around the county for this special day the whole family can enjoy. Follow signs to the Navy Area on the east side of the turf picnic area.
