Length of Time: 1-month clerkship, 8 month core (CSPM)
Maximum: clerks 2/month, CSPM 4/core
Offered: year round
Limitations/prerequisites: 3.0 GPA or higher
Goals:
Our 4th year podiatric medical student rotations are designed to provide an in depth exposure to podiatric medicine and surgery at Maricopa Medical Center. There is a large emphasis on wound care and surgery related to wounds, but with our busy clinic volume all aspects of podiatric medicine and surgery are seen. Students will be exposed to congenital deformities in neonates, trauma of all varieties, biomechanics, and foot complaints in a range of ages from pediatric to geriatric. Students will be responsible for daily in-patient rounds with the residents and attendings. Didactic series occurs Monday evenings with journal club at least once each month. The core programs include medicine, orthopedic surgery, and trauma as well as other rotations as specified by your school or program.
Format:
Students will rotate through the Maricopa Medical Center Podiatry and Clinic. Surgery will be divided equally between all students and performed several times per week with faculty. In clinic, students will be expected to see patients, present to a senior resident or attending, formulate a differential diagnosis, and recommend tests to narrow the diagnosis list, and discuss the case with the attending. Each Monday afternoon students will be expected to present an interesting case from the previous week to Dr. Geller.
Evaluation Methods:
Students are evaluated on their school’s evaluation requirements. Clinical case logs must be maintained in accordance with your school and reviewed prior to departing at the end of an assigned rotation. If your school does not provide an evaluation tool, we will use our own.
