APEX Awards are based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content, and overall communications effectiveness and excellence. Internal Audit received the APEX award for their annual performance report.

National Center for Civic Innovation 2007 Trailblazer Award - Internal Audit Department received the 2007 Government Performance Reporting Demonstration Grant Program Trailblazer Award from the National Center for Civic Innovation. Internal Audit was one of twenty-four government organizations to receive a $30,000 demonstration grant for the Citizens' Performance Measurement Report. The award is given for successfully completing the work required as a grantee.

2006 NACo Achievement Award - National Association of Counties awarded Maricopa County for its Internet Usage Risk Management Program. This program was designed to address inappropriate Internet usage at Maricopa County. Through ongoing Internet usage reviews and the innovative use of computer-assisted auditing techniques, the County has raised managment awareness, promoted acceptable use, and limited abuse of County resources. This is an effective managment tool because it focuses on high risk/high probability users.

2005 Certificate of Excellence
Recognizing exceptional Accountability Reports, the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) has awarded the “Certificate of Excellence in Service Efforts and Accomplishments (SEA)“ to Internal Audit after in-depth evaluation of performance reports submitted by more than 20 governments and government agencies.
“Making government more accountable is an ideal that should inspire every public servant,“ said AGA Executive Director, Relmond Van Daniker. “This award for excellence should alert the tax-paying public, Congress, public interest groups, and other financial management professionals that state and local government agencies are strenuously working to make the government more accountable.“

NACo 2005 Achievement Award - National Association of Counties awarded Maricopa County for its Jurors Helping Jurors - The Juror Improvement Fund Program. The program allows jurors to donate juror fees and mileage reimbursements to help other jurors have a good court experience. Program funds provide a juror shuttle bus, jury assembly room satellite television, and post-trama counseling for jurors. This program was developed by the Superior Court, in concurrence with Internal Audit's recommendation.

National Center for Civic Innovation Grant Award Citizen's Report
Maricopa County 's Internal Audit Department has been selected to receive a $30,000 grant form the National Center for Civic Innovation (NCCI). The NCCI, with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, is launching the Government Performance Reporting Demonstration Grant Program to encourage local and state governments to apply the criteria specified in the Governmental Accounting Standards Board's (GASB) Special Report, Performance Reporting: Suggested Criteria for Effective Communication .

2002 Special Projects Award – Managing for Results - PMC
The National Association of Local Government Auditors (NALGA) Special Projects Award annually recognizes the best, most innovative, non-audit report or project as judged by its impact, usefulness, originality, and success. Maricopa County Internal Audit earned the award for its Managing for Results – PMC, Performance Measure Certification Report.
The judges commented that the topic was timely and of broad interest to people in local government. They added that the report’s presentation communicates effectively with visual appeal due to the successful use of graphics, flowcharting, and inclusion of the self-assessment checklist.

The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) recognizes internal audit activities committed to improving the quality of their internal auditing function in the areas of professional excellence, quality of service, and professional outreach. Internal Audit is one of only eight auditing departments worldwide to receive the award for the second half of the year 2002.

2002 Distinguished Local Government Leadership Award - Ross Tate, Maricopa County Auditor The Association of Government Accountants (AGA) awarded Ross Tate, Maricopa County Auditor its 2002 Distinguished Local Government Leadership Award. AGA annually presents only two crystal awards to local government professionals who exemplify and promote:
- Government financial management excellence.
- Outstanding leadership in enhancing sound financial management legislation, regulations, practices, policies and systems.
- Outstanding leadership in local government that led to improved financial management practices, policies, systems or operations and consistently exhibited the highest personal and professional standards.

2002 Award for Excellence in Government Finance - Performance Measure Certification Program
The Maricopa County Internal Audit Department has been awarded the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) 2002 Award for Excellence in Government Finance. The GFOA Award for Excellence program recognizes the most valuable contributions to the field of government finances, with particular focus upon creativity, technical significance, overall value to the profession, and transferability to other government entities.
Internal Audit's Performance Measure Certification Program (PMC) was judged to be one of the most outstanding entries in the Accounting, Auditing and Financial Reporting category. Maricopa County received one of only four GFOA Excellence Awards issued in 2002.

The report pulls information from detailed financial statements and displays the data in user-friendly graphs. The report enables readers to analyze past and future trends to quickly assess the County's financial health. The report also displays comparative trends from ten benchmark counties.

2000 Special Projects Award - Cash Handling Self-Assessment Workshop
The National Association of Local Government Auditors (NALGA) Special Projects Award annually recognizes the best non-audit report or project judged on the basis of service impact, forward-thinking perspective, innovative process, and project success. Maricopa County earned the award in the medium-size audit shop category for its Self-Assessment Workshop for departments with cash handling responsibilities.
Maricopa County Internal Audit's Self-Assessment Workshop for Departments with Cash Handling Responsibilities delivered targeted training to 189 participants and resulted in a wide range of control enhancements across 36 County departments. The workshop used innovative techniques to successfully address key internal control concerns across the entire organization. Project benefits included improved interdepartmental communications and an enhanced image of Internal Audit throughout the County.
