Reaching out to inner city youth...
Supervisor Wilcox and
her husband, Earl, have been running Late Night Basketball, a youth intervention
program, for 17 years. Every year, the program includes a free summer league and
Labor Day Tournament.
The Labor Day Tournament includs
a weekend of fun. Along with about 500 kids and their families, Supervisor Mary
Rose Wilcox and other local sports and community leaders celebrate the culmination
of the summer league with a banquet and awards on Friday, and day of championship
games of Saturday.
"It has been working for the
past decade. Kids often come up to us and tell us how this program has changed their
life," Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox said. "I have been supportive of Late
Night Basketball because I long ago realized the importance of offering alternatives
to individuals, particularly to our youth, in order to combat the criminal elements
they are exposed to on a daily basis."
Age categories include 10 & under,
12 & under, 15 & under, and 18 & under.
