Don Stapley
(R)
Maricopa County District 2 Supervisor
Chairman 1997, 2002, 2006, 2010
Vice-Chairman 2000, 2005, 2009
Don Stapley was re-elected to a fourth full term as Maricopa County Supervisor, District 2 in November 2008. He was elected to his third term as Chairman of the board in 2006 and also served as Chairman in 2010, 2002, and 1997. In addition, he
served as the Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Adjustments as a private citizen.
He was named County Leader of the Year in 2004 by the American City & County
Magazine for his leadership locally and nationally.
Currently, Supervisor Stapley is Immediate Past President of the National Association of Counties. In July 2008, American’s county officials unanimously elected Mr. Stapley president of the National Association of Counties (NACo), to serve until July 2009. In his acceptance speech, he called for the need to restore the federal-county partnership. His two signature initiatives for his term were as follows:
- Increase green vehicle fleets in America's counties. Stapley is working with the federal government, auto
manufacturers and others to combine education, advocacy and discounted purchasing opportunities to assist counties
in moving toward green fleets.
- Promote a civil dialogue on immigration. Recognizing the bitter debate about illegal immigration in the U.S. has
erected impediments to thoughtful, economically rational national policy, Stapley intends to use the powerful NACo
platform to promote civil discussions and help leaders at all levels to build consensus around a workable system of
legal immigration.
Mr. Stapley was born in Phoenix and graduated from Westwood High School in Mesa. He earned a Bachelor of
Arts degree from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He is a lifelong Arizona resident and member of an
Arizona pioneer family.
Mr. Stapley’s additional duties include membership on the United Cities and Local Government’s Executive Committee, Past President of NACo (Officer on Executive Committee), and Chair of the County Commission on Justice System Intervention for the Seriously Mentally Ill.
As a member of his community, Mr. Stapley has volunteered for youth development and education organizations that include the Grand Canyon Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Mesa Eastern Education Foundation, the Mesa Family YMCA, and the Mesa Little League. He has also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Lutheran Health Care Network for more than 10 years. Mr. Stapley is an honorary member of the Mesa Baseline Rotary Club.
Mr. Stapley is the owner of Stapley and Company, a real estate management firm and holds an active broker's license.
He lives in the East Valley where he is active in his church and the youth activities his church sponsors. Mr. Stapley and his wife, Kathy, have four children and seven grandchildren.
