    The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday agreed to spend $6.3 million to install escalators in the court-tower project under construction in downtown Phoenix.

    The 16-story tower located at the corner of First Avenue and Madison Street in downtown Phoenix is slated for a Feb. 2012 opening.

    Criminal court administrator Bob James said separation of defendants and victims is a key design feature of the new building.

    The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors gathered on Monday, April 19, 2010, to celebrate a crucial and significant milestone in the construction of the new Maricopa County Court Tower. On the previous Friday, the last steel beam was hoisted 16 stories above downtown Phoenix, concluding the structural steel erection which began September 2009.

    “Topping Out” is a tradition in the construction industry that recognizes the completion of the top structure of a building. As part of the topping out tradition, the last beam is painted white and an evergreen tree is placed upon the structure to symbolize growth and bring luck. The beam was signed by more than 400 crew and project members, elected officials and other invited guests.

    As construction crews hammered away, judges, supervisors and construction managers on Monday celebrated the topping out of the 16-story court tower in downtown Phoenix.

    Workers on Friday placed the last steel beam of the $340 million Maricopa County Criminal Court Tower, a milestone for a major public project.

    Construction crews are close to topping out the 16-story court tower near First Avenue and Madison Street in downtown Phoenix.
