How Fit Are You?

Do you remember being in elementary school and having to take the Presidential Physical Fitness Test every year? It was a series of timed physical fitness activities including running, sit-ups, and pullups, and you either looked forward to it, or dreaded it passionately depending on your fitness level.
Would you be interested in how well you would perform on those tests today? Believe it or not, the very same Presidential Fitness test is available for adults. You can test your aerobic fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition, enter your data online and receive an evaluation. You can complete these activities privately, on your own time, without the watchful eyes of your classmates. Best of all, you don't have to wear the smelly PE uniform you keep forgetting to take home to wash!
Visit AdultFitnessTest.org to get started.

Better Choices, Better Health

Do you have an ongoing health condition? Would you like to find practical ways to deal with your issue and make informed treatment decisions?
Wellness Works along with the Maricopa County Department of Public  Health, and the Arizona Living Well Institute is offering Better Choices, Better Health, an online interactive workshop for 25-30 people with ongoing health conditions. The workshops are facilitated by two trained leaders, one or both of whom are peers with chronic health conditions. Sessions are interactive through internal messaging and online discussion boards. The goal is for the participants to become confident in their ability to manage their health and maintain active fulfilling lives.
Anyone with a chronic condition such as diabetes, arthritis, asthma, or any other on-going health problem is welcome to participate. For more information, and to register, click here.

Health Tips from Your Health Coach

Give stress a rest
Stress is a fact of life. Although some stress is normal and even useful at times, too much stress can have a negative effect on your health. Make a point of setting aside at least 10 minutes a day to stop what you’re doing, take a few deep breaths and relax. Just 10 deep breaths at your desk can make a big difference in your stress levels.
Tips to relieve stress and relax
  • Soak in a warm bath
  • Listen to soothing music
  • Take a walk or do some other activity, such as yoga
  • Laugh
  • Practice relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or meditation

Congratulations to all of our fit, fabulous County employees who stayed up late to run in The Night Run on Saturday, May 12th.
Thanks to their efforts, the Maricopa County team came in second place with a time of 41:03. (The team time is obtained by averaging the times of the five fastest runners on the team.)
