Walgreens Health Initiatives (WHI) administers the prescription benefit for Maricopa County. WHI's network of pharmacies includes Walgreens, Albertsons, Bashas', CVS, Fry’s Marketplace**, Kmart, Osco, Safeway, Target**, Wal-Mart** and more. Many pharmacies have extended hours.

**Offer $4 generic medications. Consult your local store for more details.

Maricopa County offers two pharmacy plans from which to choose: Co-insurance Plan and Consumer Choice Plan.

The Co-insurance plan is a multi-tiered plan in which a co-insurance amount (percentage of the cost of the medication) is charged (unless the applicable minimum or maximum threshold is met) based on the drug classification. This plan covers generic, preferred brand name and non-preferred brand name medications. For related documents, click here or on the Co-insurance Plan link below.

The Consumer Choice Pharmacy plan is focused on smart spending of pharmaceuticals, with some funding by Maricopa County, it includes a rollover feature allowing you to create a credit balance for unused money left on account. Depending on your needs, prescriptions can be obtained from three different sources:

  • Short-Term Needs: Up to a 30-Day Supply at WHI Network Retail Pharmacies
The retail network of pharmacies is available for prescriptions you need right away, for a short time only (such as antibiotics). You can choose from thousands of participating network pharmacies nationwide, and you can obtain up to a 30-day supply at one time.
  • Long-Term Needs: Three Month Supply at Certain Retail Pharmacies
When you need prescriptions for chronic or long-term health conditions (such as, but not limited to, high blood pressure, diabetes or asthma) you must purchase a three-month supply, following two (2) prescription fills.
  • Three Month Supply through the Mail Service Pharmacy: Walgreens Mail Service
Prescriptions for maintenance medications or long-term health conditions can also be ordered through the Walgreens Mail Service pharmacy. Ordering through the mail is both a safe and easy way to receive prescriptions and could save you money.
