Maricopa County Air Quality Department
About Us

The Maricopa County Air Quality Department is a regulatory agency whose goal is to ensure federal clean air standards are achieved and maintained for the residents and visitors of Maricopa County. The department is governed by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors and follows air quality standards set forth by the federal Clean Air Act.

The department has statutory authority (ARS ยง49-402.B) for air quality programs and receives direct delegation/authority from the Environmental Protection Agency for certain air quality programs. In addition, the department has responsibility through a formal agreement with ADEQ and MAG for emission inventories, air quality monitoring data, and its Travel Reduction Program.

Divisions and Programs

Air Monitoring uses monitors posted throughout the county to measure pollution in the air.

Business Assistance provides technical assistance and information about air quality rules and regulations to businesses.

Compliance and Enforcement is responsible for ensuring that facilities are in compliance with applicable regulations and permit conditions.

The Ombudsman supports small and large businesses, trade associations, public interest groups, and individual community members with all aspects of the regulatory process.

Permit Engineering reviews permit applications, and writes and issues permits.

Planning and Analysis is responsible for drafting and finalizing rules and managing emissions data.

Travel Reduction manages the Maricopa County Travel Reduction Program to help reduce air pollution caused by motor vehicles.
