"Get Wet Beginner Kayaking" Program On-water Skills Course
Desert Outdoor Center
Have you ever wanted to give flat water lake kayaking a try? Well here is your chance. Lake Pleasant Regional Park, the Desert Outdoor Center, and Cabelas is once again presenting the "Get Wet Beginner Kayaking" program. The program starts with a free one hour informational classroom session held at the Glendale Cabelas on Friday evening (you will not get wet). You do not need to register to attend the classroom session.

Dates of free 1-hour classroom introductory sessions are: August 2, August 16, September 13

Then if you would like to experience flat-water kayaking on Lake Plesant, you may sign up for an on-the-water session that will be held at the Desert Outdoor Center at Lake Pleasant. The $40 registration fee for the on-the-water portion will be collected during the evening classroom session at Cabelas. Registration for on-the-water sessions begins at 6:00pm on a first come, first serve basis. Cash or check only please. Ages 12 & up, but if under 18 years then must be accompanied by an adult. Dates for 3-hour on-the-water sessions are: August 10, August 24, September 21 (choose from a 7AM or 9AM arrival time; sign up and pay at any of the Friday classes; on-water sessions fill up fast, so first come, first served)

PLEASE NOTE: The Desert Outdoor Center is a gated facility, so you must be registered to attend. Gates will be open 30 minutes before each session begins.

***There is no boat ramp access to launch a kayak at this facility, so please do not bring your personal kayaks. The boat dock is about a 1/4 mi down from the facility, so please be prepared for a short hike.

Life along the Creek - Spur Cross
Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area
August 24 Saturday 8:00 am Life along the Creek (moderate) Join interpretive ranger Kevin Smith as we look at the plants and animals that live in the riparian area along Cave Creek. The hike will take us through the Jewel of the Creek and along the lower section of the Dragonfly Trail for a distance of approximately 1.5 miles. Some rock-hopping may be required.

Cool Kids Sprinkler Fun - Estrella
Estrella Mountain Park
Bring your kids to the park to enjoy some time outside. We will have a small area of sprinklers set up for the kids to run through in our grass picnic area. Adults can sit in the shade of a nearby ramada, or bring your own lawn chair for a little relaxation in the park while the kids cool off in the water. Sprinklers will be set up for a limited time (1.5 hours) and parents must stay and supervise their little ones, but are encouraged to play along with them! Location: Ramada #2 in our picnic area.

If you would like to know the answers to these questions, or any questions you may have about our desert, then this one-hour presentation is for you! Bring your sandwich to the “Brown-Bag It” series inside our Nature Center as Ranger B busts some myths about the desert. Location: Nature Center.

RSVP requested. Would you believe that desert foods are not only nutritious, but can taste great, too? Drop in to the Nature Center on your way back from your hike, and try a homemade mesquite flour pancake topped with agave syrup, prickly pear pad salsa, or a cracker with prickly pear jelly. Small tastings will be served in our air-conditioned Visitor Center. This program is free with $6 per vehicle entry fee, but an rsvp is requested for program supplies.

“Just for Kids” – These Rocks Rock! - Usery Park
Usery Mountain Regional Park
Kids, do you like rocks? Want to find out the names of different rocks? Want to discover what they are made of and how they were made? Come to Usery Park and find out! Geologist AJ Lombard will teach you some cool things about the rocks you can find in Arizona. This indoor program and slide presentation is designed for kids ages 7 and up. Location: Nature Center.

Diurnal, Crepuscular, Nocturnal. What does it all mean? Come on out to the Nature Center and Ranger Mark will explain as we venture out into the desert, at night! Bring a flashlight, sturdy footwear, plenty of water and a camera! BONUS! Bring a “blacklight” to spot scorpions!

Adult Moonlight Walk at White Tank Park
White Tank Mountains Regional Park
Walking the Waterfall trail in the moonlight will give you a different appreciation for the desert. We will discuss the unique changes in the desert after the sun sets. This is a relatively flat trail but adequate hiking shoes are required (No open toed shoes). This is for adults only – no one under 16 years of age please. Meet at Area 6. No dogs please.
