San Tan Shredders Mountain Bike Group - San Tan
San Tan Mountain Regional Park
Due to it becoming hotter this time of year, we will starting the mountain bike rides a bit earlier than normal. We hope you can join us again for another exciting mountain bike ride among the beautiful San Tan Mountains. Most group rides are comprised of riders from all various skill levels, ages and fitness levels, but we all share the common interest of riding mountain bikes. "No Rider Left Behind" is our policy, because we ride together in groups based upon your riding levels. This is your opportunity to be around others who are passionate about mountain biking as a sport to have fun. We offer help when needed so you can gain new skills and confidence while on the trails. Come out and enjoy the great views of the San Tan Mountain Regional Park and the quiet get away from the everyday noise. This is a great way to get some exercise, have fun and meet some awesome people. A helmet is mandatory for safety reasons and please bring plenty of water, bike tools, extra inner tube, tire pump and the appropriate riding gear. We will be meeting at the main entrance to the trails just west of the Ranger station. Hope to see you on the trail soon!

"Get Wet Beginner Kayaking" Program On-water Skills Course
Desert Outdoor Center
Have you ever wanted to give flat water lake kayaking a try? Well here is your chance. Lake Pleasant Regional Park, the Desert Outdoor Center, and Cabelas is once again presenting the "Get Wet Beginner Kayaking" program. The program starts with a free one hour informational classroom session held at the Glendale Cabelas on Friday evening (you will not get wet). You do not need to register to attend the classroom session.

Dates of free 1-hour classroom introductory sessions are: August 8, August 22, September 5

Then if you would like to experience flat-water kayaking on Lake Plesant, you may sign up for an on-the-water session that will be held at the Desert Outdoor Center at Lake Pleasant. The $40 registration fee for the on-the-water portion will be collected during the evening classroom session at Cabelas. Registration for on-the-water sessions begins at 6:00pm on a first come, first serve basis. Cash or check only please. Ages 12 & up, but if under 18 years then must be accompanied by an adult. Call 602-372-7470 for more information.

Dates for 3-hour on-the-water sessions are: August 9, August 23, September 6 (choose from a 7AM or 9AM arrival time; sign up and pay at any of the Friday classes; on-water sessions fill up fast, so first come, first served)

PLEASE NOTE: The Desert Outdoor Center is a gated facility, so you must be registered to attend. Gates will be open 30 minutes before each session begins.

***There is no boat ramp access to launch a kayak at this facility, so please do not bring your personal kayaks. The boat dock is about a 1/4 mi down from the facility, so please be prepared for a short hike.

Life along the Creek - Spur Cross
Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area
August 23 Saturday 7:00 am Life along the Creek (moderate) Join interpretive ranger Kevin Smith as we look at the plants and animals that live in the riparian area along Cave Creek. The hike will take us through the Jewel of the Creek and along the lower section of the Dragonfly Trail for a distance of approximately 1.5 miles. Some rock-hopping may be required. NOTE: This program is part of the “County Parks are getting Wet ‘n’ Wild this Summer” promotion. At the end of the program, we will give away a free family four-pack (4 free tickets to the Wet ‘n’ Wild Water Park)

This program will focus on camouflage techniques that animals use to help them go undetected. Have you spent time hiking or camping and seen little or no wildlife? Sharpen your skills and learn some of the best ways to spot things that you may have been overlooking! Meet at the Nature Center for this indoor program.

For those who have successfully completed “Archery 101”, we will open the range for some “practice” time. We will close the range promptly at 1pm. All About Scorpions - Usery Park
Usery Mountain Regional Park
How dangerous are scorpions? How can we protect ourselves from them? How do they survive and thrive in our desert? If you would like to know the answers to these questions, or any questions you may have about scorpions, then this one-hour presentation is for you! Bring your sandwich to the “Brown-Bag It” series inside our Nature Center as Ranger B shares some amazing facts about these desert dwellers. Watch us feed our snakes after the program at 7:30pm. Then join our “Scorpion Hunt” at 8pm at no extra cost!

Summer Night Ride Series- McDowell Competitive Track
McDowell Mountain Regional Park
The summer night mountain bike series will be held on Friday or Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. All riders must have a helmet, a lighting system designed for mountain biking and battery power for 3 hours of riding. Riders must sign-in and sign-out, two hours are allowed to ride the Competitive Track. Riders may choose the ride the Sport/tech/long loop or stay on either the Sport or Technical loops. It is highly recommended that you ride this trail in day light before coming out for a night ride. The sign in/out sheets are available at 6:30 for riders who might need extra time in order to be back by 10pm. NO RIDERS WILL BE ALLOWED TO START AFTER 8:00 p.m.

Scorpion Hunt - Usery Park
Usery Mountain Regional Park
Did you know that scorpions glow in the dark under a blacklight? Join Ranger B as he leads us on this fun and safe night walk on a trail to find these elusive desert dwellers (using our eyes only). You will sharpen your spotting skills and have a lot of fun at the same time! All ages will enjoy this casual one-hour/one-mile walk. Please wear closed-toe shoes and bring water and a flashlight (blacklights are recommended and are for sale for $10, batteries and tax included). No pets, please. Location: Horse Staging Area. Join our “All About Scorpions” program inside our Nature Center at 6:30pm and our snake feeding at 7:30pm at no extra cost!
