Fridays Fitness Hike - Trailhead Staging Area- McDowell
McDowell Mountain Regional Park
Fridays Fitness Hike – Various locations in Park- ALL Fridays Come to one or all of the Fitness Hiking Series, every Friday. We build up to a longer hike at the end of the month. Please wear sturdy shoes & bring plenty of water. Meet at the Trailhead Staging Area for this week's location.

Petroglyph Hike - Estrella
Estrella Mountain Park
On this 1.5-mile hike, you will see evidence of a past civilization, the Hohokam. The Park Ranger will take you to areas not usually accessible to the public. The trail is easy, but there will be some climbing involved, so be prepared. Meet at the Horseshoe Trailhead.

Beginner Flat Water Kayaking Class at Glendale Cabela’s
Lake Pleasant Regional Park
Have you ever wanted to give flat water lake kayaking a try? Well here is your chance. Lake Pleasant Regional Park, the Desert Outdoor Center, and Cabelas is once again presenting the "Get Wet Beginner Kayaking" program. A free informational classroom session will be held at the Glendale Cabelas on Friday evening (you will not get wet). You do not need to register to attend the classroom session. Then if you would like to experience flat-water kayaking on Lake Plesant, you may sign up for an on-the-water session that will be held at the Desert Outdoor Center. The $40 registration fee for the on-the-water portion will be collected during the evening classroom session at Cabelas. Registration for on-the-water sessions begins at 6:00pm on a first come, first serve basis. Cash or check only please. Ages 12 & up, call 602-372-7470 for more information. Dates of free 1-hour classroom introductory sessions are: August 2, August 16, and September 13. Dates for the 3-hour on-the-water sessions are: August 10, August 24, and September 21 (pick a 7AM or 9AM arrival time; sign up and pay at any of the Friday classes, on-water sessions fill up fast, so first come, first served) PLEASE NOTE: The Desert Outdoor Center is a gated facility, so you must be registered to attend. Gates will be open 30 minutes before each session begins. ***There is no boat ramp access to launch a kayak at this facility, so please do not bring your personal kayaks. FREE Introduction to Kayaking Classroom Presentation at Cabela's
Desert Outdoor Center
Would you like to try kayaking but don't know where to start? Everything you need to know about flat-water kayaking will be presented at the "Get Wet Beginner Kayaking" program. Lake Pleasant Regional Park, the Desert Outdoor Center, and Cabela’s is presenting a free one-hour informational classroom session that will be held at the Glendale Cabela’s on Friday evening (you will NOT get wet). No registration is necessary to attend the classroom session.

Dates of FREE 1-hour classroom introductory sessions are: August 2, August 16, September 13

Then if you wish to try your skills in a kayak, you may sign up for one of six on-the-water sessions that will be held at the Desert Outdoor Center at Lake Pleasant. The $40 registration fee for the on-the-water portion will be collected before the evening classroom session at Cabela’s. Registration will begin at 6:00p.m. on first come, first serve basis. Cash or check only please.

Dates for 3-hour on-the-water sessions are: August 10, August 24, Sept 21 (choose from a 7a.m. or 9 a.m. arrival time)

(Sign up and pay at any of the Friday classes, on-water sessions fill up fast, so first come, first served)

Movie Night in the Park: "Untamed Americas - Deserts" - Usery Park
Usery Mountain Regional Park
When it comes to desert animals, the truth is often stranger than fiction! How about a mouse that howls? A lizard that uses chemical weapons? Penguins in the desert? Moths with sonar-jamming technology? This new National Geographic movie will highlight the strange and spectacular animals that call the desert “home.” Feel free to bring snacks and drinks with you (no glass bottles), otherwise, concessions are available. Location: Nature Center. NOTE: This program is part of the “County Parks are getting Wet ‘n’ Wild this Summer” promotion. At the end of the program, we will give away a free family four-pack (4 free tickets to the Wet ‘n’ Wild Water Park – a $160 value!!)

***This program has been cancelled. Please look at our calendar to see more exciting programs available. We apologize for any inconveniences. Thank you for supporting Maricopa County Parks and Recreation.*** Venture into the Sonoran Desert at night for a chance to see the illusive animals that come out under the cover of darkness. With our high power spotlights we will hit the trails aiming to find coyotes, foxes, bobcats, snakes and any other exciting creatures out in about in the park. Spotlights and flashlights are welcome on this 1.3- mile hike. This will be a low noise hike, with chatter at a minimum, to increase our chances of seeing wildlife.

Scorpion Scavenger Hunt! -“The County Parks are getting Wet ‘n’ Wild this Summer!” -McDowell Park
McDowell Mountain Regional Park
Scorpions are a lot more fun to find when you spot them glowing under a blacklight, scavenger-hunt style (outside, rather than in your house)! Learn all about these venomous creatures and what makes them so well-adapted to life in the Sonoran Desert. Did you know that we commonly see three different species? And that all scorpions glow-- the same color--under a black light? Bring a flashlight or a blacklight (we will have a limited number available for purchase for $10), and wear sturdy shoes. This short walk will be about a 1/2 mile in length. Meet at the Trailhead Staging Area.The County Parks are getting Wet ‘n’ Wild this Summer! “The County Parks are getting Wet ‘n’ Wild this Summer!” That means program participants will be eligible to win a 4-pak of tickets to Wet ‘n’ Wild Phoenix! 1. Tickets will be issued one per family. 2. Families can only win one set of 2013 Wet ‘n’ Wild tickets. 3. Visitors must attend the program in full and must be present to win. At the end of the program, the Interpretive Ranger will pull one winning ticket. 4. One 4-pack will be issued per program.
