May 17 Friday 7:00 am Sonoran Desert 101 (easy) Join interpretive ranger Kevin Smith on a hike through the beautiful upland vegetation in Spur Cross. Learn about the ecology of the Sonoran desert and spend an enjoyable 2 hours of hiking slowly and enjoying nature. We encourage you to bring binoculars if you have them.

San Tan Mountain Regional Park
Friday Fitness Hike Friday, May 17th, 9a.m.-10a.m Health and fitness go together hand and hand, but instead of being in a gym all day, head outside and take pleasure in the scenic beauty of the San Tans. Breathe in the fresh air, take in the sights and enjoy a few fitness facts along the way. On this 1.3-mile fitness hike we will be discussing desert attire. This program is part of a hiking series that will take place on select Friday’s each month with a new fitness facts topic for each hike.

All About Cactuses - "Brown-Bag It" with Ranger B - Usery Park

What makes cactuses different from other plants? What are the species of cactus that are found in this area? How do they survive and thrive in our desert? If you would like to know the answers to these questions, or any questions you may have about cactuses, then this one-hour presentation is for you! Bring your sandwich to the “Brown-Bag It” series inside our Nature Center as Ranger B shares some amazing facts about these botanical delights. Location: Nature Center.

Matinee Movie! “The County Parks are getting Wet ‘n’ Wild this Summer!”- Cave Creek Regional Park

Bring the kids to the park for some fun at the playground, then bring them inside the “air-conditioned” Nature Center for a fun family friendly feature film and a picnic lunch! You bring the kids and snacks and we’ll provide the entertainment! “The County Parks are getting Wet ‘n’ Wild this Summer!” That means program participants will be eligible to win a 4-pak of tickets to Wet ‘n’ Wild Phoenix! 1. Tickets will be issued one per family. 2. Families can only win one set of 2013 Wet ‘n’ Wild tickets. 3. Visitors must attend the program in full and must be present to win. At the end of the program, the Interpretive Ranger will pull one winning ticket. 4. One 4-pack will be issued per program.

Family Moonlight Hike
White Tank Mountains Regional Park
Walking along the Waddell Trail to the Mesquite Canyon Wash in the moonlight will give you a different perspective on the beauty of the Uplands Desert. We will discuss the unique changes in the desert after the sun sets. Bring a flashlight. Meet in Area 7. No dogs please.

Summer Full Moon Hike - McDowell
McDowell Mountain Regional Park
There is no better way to experience the desert than on a night hike with the sounds of nightbirds and singing toads in the summer. Join Ranger Amy to on this 3 mile hike by the light of the moon at McDowell Mountain Regional Park. Flashlights are not necessary, but permitted. Bring plenty of water and sturdy shoes. Hiking time is 2 1/2 hours, and 3 miles. No pets please. Hikes begin at the Trailhead Staging area. Moonlit hike programs are free with $6/vehicle entry to the Park.

Scorpion Scavenger Hunt! - McDowell Park
McDowell Mountain Regional Park
Scorpions are a lot more fun to find when you spot them glowing under a blacklight, scavenger-hunt style (outside, rather than in your house)! Learn all about these venomous creatures and what makes them so well-adapted to life in the Sonoran Desert. Did you know that we commonly see three different species? And that all scorpions glow-- the same color--under a black light? Bring a flashlight or a blacklight, and wear sturdy shoes. This short walk will be about a 1/2 mile in length. Meet at the Trailhead Staging Area.
