Picnic area closed for special event - Estrella
Estrella Mountain Park
All picnic ramadas and the grass picnic area loop have been reserved for a special event on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday (2/7, 2/8 and 2/9). Hiking trails and the arena area of the park are still available for normal use.

A foot race will originate at the Trailhead Staging Area on Saturday morning. This race is not as large as some but about half of the lot will be filled with participants and volunteer parking.

Bird Walk with Sonoran Audubon Society- Estrella

Join knowledgeable folks from the Sonoran Audobon Society for an easy walk to discover the bird life of Estrella Park. When you think about it, everyone is a birdwatcher—you can do it wherever or whoever you are– it’s just more fun to know what they are. Meet at the Nature Center. Rain cancels event.

Progressive Fitness Hike #2 - Usery Park
Usery Mountain Regional Park
Want to increase your fitness level and also enjoy the outdoors? Hit the trails with us for a fun way to get back in shape! During this hike series, each hike will increase in length and difficulty in order to help you prepare for the grand finale hike – the 7.5 mile loop trail around Pass Mountain! This is a great way to get in shape and to hike many different trails in Usery Park at the same time. This hike series will take place every Saturday morning through March 8. This second hike of the series will be approximately 3.5 miles on fairly level terrain. Please bring water, hats, and closed-toe shoes. Location: Staging Area. Note: Participation in the 4th or 5th hike in this series is required to do the final hike. Please be aware that this series involves elevation changes, uneven terrain, and a moderate pace. Participants are expected to stay with the group.

Basic Map and Compass Orienteering - Lake Pleasant
Lake Pleasant Regional Park
Call and sign up! If you have ever wanted to learn how to use a map and compass together, here is your chance. Call 602-372-7460 x 202 and leave your name, phone number, and how many people in your group will be attending. There is no cost except for the park entry fee. This class is one hour inside and three hours outside hiking. Wear good hiking shoes and bring your water bottle and a whistle.

Desert Washes Walk - Spur Cross
Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area
February 8 Saturday 9:00 am Desert Washes Walk (moderate) Come discover the fascinating world of a desert wash. This hike will feature the exploration of Cottonwood Wash which drains into Cave Creek. Along the way we will discuss desert washes and mesas and how the ecosystems differ. Long pants and sturdy shoes are recommended. Bring plenty of water.

Archery 101 - Intro to Archery - San Tan
San Tan Mountain Regional Park
Are you the next Robin Hood? Do you know the difference between a compound bow versus a re-curve bow? If you are curious about archery but you are too afraid to give it a try, then Archery 101 is just for you. Come out to San Tan Mountain Park to find out what you’ve been missing. You will be introduced to the International Target Style Archery in a safe and fun environment. Participants must at least 8-years of age. Adults are encouraged to participate. Please bring water, hats, and closed-toe shoes. No registration – just show up and have some fun. Meet at horse staging.

For those who completed our “Archery 101” class, this class will take you to the next level! Participants will learn about field target archery, discover how to improve their accuracy, and enjoy some friendly competition. Equipment will be provided. Participants must be graduates of our “Archery 101” class. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring water, hats, and closed-toe shoes. Meet at the Archery Range. 10 AM - Noon. Mobile Phone Photography Workshop– McDowell Mtn Regional Park

Most of the photos that get posted to McDowell Mountain Park’s Facebook page were taken on Ranger Amy’s iPhone. It’s amazing what you can capture with the camera you are already carrying around in your pocket. Learn how to make the most of your megapixels with just a few lessons in composition and style. And what better setting to learn photographic technique than in a beautiful natural park setting! Wear comfortable walking shoes, dress appropriately, and bring a smartphone with photo-taking abilities and the photo application(s) of your choice for this hands-on workshop. Meet at the North Trail.

Where have all the bird nests gone? - Estrella

This program discusses approximately 30 species of birds, especially those in the Southwest and Arizona, that are experiencing threats to their numbers. Emphasis is placed on the new Audubon Society initiative on birds of concern within riparian corridors and flyways of Arizona, and their current status on the IUCN Red List. Special guest speaker Joe Ford will present this program in the Nature Center.

"Just for Kids" - Toddler Cruise - Usery Park
Usery Mountain Regional Park
This 1-mile hike is designed for parents and caregivers with small children, ages 3 – 6. Along with Miss Lynn, the kids will howl like coyotes, do the “bobcat crawl” and learn how to hydrate by counting gulps of water on their fingers. We will explore the desert along the scenic Merkle Trail. The hard-smooth surface of this trail will accommodate wheelchairs and strollers. Please bring water, hats, and closed-toe shoes. Location: Area 6.

Stargazing for Everyone!
White Tank Mountains Regional Park
Enjoy a night under the stars! Learn some of the constellations and listen to stories of the night sky. View the moon, planets, star clusters and galaxies through telescopes provided by presenting astronomers. Please bring a chair for the 45-minute presentation portion. Event is held at Area 4. Please try to arrive by 7:15 to facilitate parking.
