Bird Walk - Estrella
Estrella Mountain Park
Join knowledgeable folks from the Sonoran Audobon Society for an easy hike along the Gila River discovering the bird life of Estrella Park. Between the river habitat, mesquite bosque and nearby farm fields, and turf area, over 150 different species have been observed. We are likely to see up to 40 species, including: Herons, Egrets, Kingfishers, Osprey’s, Hawks, Ibis, and Stilts. When you think about it, everyone is a birdwatcher—you can do it wherever or whoever you are– it’s just more fun to know what they are. Meet at the Nature Center. Rain cancels event.

Progressive Fitness Hike #2 - Usery Park
Usery Mountain Regional Park
Want to increase your fitness level and also enjoy the outdoors? Hit the trails with us for a fun way to get back in shape! During this hike series, each hike will increase in length and difficulty in order to help you prepare for the grand finale hike – the 7.5 mile loop trail around Pass Mountain! This is a great way to get in shape and to hike many different trails in Usery Park at the same time. This hike series will take place every Saturday at 8am through December 7. This second hike of the series will be approximately 3.5 miles on fairly level terrain. Please bring water, hats, and closed-toe shoes. Location: Staging Area. Note: Participation in the 4th or 5th hike in this series is required to do the final hike. Please be aware that this series involves elevation changes, uneven terrain, and a moderate pace. Participants are expected to stay with the group.

Saturday Bird Walk - Usery Park

How do you tell one brown bird from the next, and what are the first three items to look for as the little rascal flits off? Are you already a novice but interested in keeping a yearly, state or national bird list? Bird expert, Sandy Hornbaker, will talk about bird habitat, behavior, range, etc. as we go in search of the native birds in this area. Please bring binoculars, water, and closed-toe shoes. If needed, we have binoculars to borrow. Location: Nature Center.

Clay Mine Hike - Cave Creek Regional Park
Cave Creek Regional Park
Join us for adventure as we explore the Clay Mine! This will be an easy 2 mile hike (round trip). Once inside, we'll discuss the history of this mine and learn how its contents were used to "cure what ailed ya"! We'll supply the hard hats. You bring water, a flashlight, & sturdy shoes. Park in the Nature Center parking lot and follow the signs to the mine. This is an "open house" format, so you may come and go at your convenience during the designated time slot. Last tour at 12:30, the mine will be closed promptly 1pm. Watch the park’s website for more information, updates or changes, prior to the event.

Desert 101 for Newcomers
White Tank Mountains Regional Park
This is a great class fo rthose new to the Valley of the Sun. This program will discuss hiking and outdoor activities. It will cover clothing, equipment, safety and environmental factors that come into play when you are out in the desert. Please meet in the nature center classroom. You may go hiking after the class.

Reptile Feeding - San Tan

Have you ever seen a reptile eat? Join the staff after your morning hike and see how our cold-blooded residents eat their meals for yourself! Frozen rodent entrees will be served to the critters. Come learn about the important roles these creatures play in our dynamic food web. Feeding takes place inside the Nature Center.

Bryan specializes in rattlesnakes, in all their various colors and patterns, and is quite knowledgeable in non-venomous varieties of snakes, as well. He’ll bring a few specimens to the Nature Center for you to observe and tell you everything you need to know about these awesome creatures!

November 9 Saturday 4:00 pm Sunset Over Spur Cross (easy) Come with us on a casual stroll along the Metate Trail as the sun sets over the hills of the conservation area.
