Progressive Fitness Hike #4 - Usery Park
Usery Mountain Regional Park
Want to increase your fitness level and also enjoy the outdoors? Hit the trails with us for a fun way to get back in shape! During this hike series, each hike will increase in length and difficulty in order to help you prepare for the grand finale hike – the 7.5-mile loop trail around Pass Mountain! This is a great way to get in shape and to hike many different trails in Usery Park at the same time. This hike series will take place every Saturday at 8am through December 7. This fourth hike of the series will be approximately 5.5 miles. Please bring water, hats, and closed-toe shoes. Location: Staging Area. Note: Participation in the 4th or 5th hike in this series is required to do the final hike. Please be aware that this series involves elevation changes, uneven terrain, and a moderate pace. Participants are expected to stay with the group.

Flora of Spur Cross **CANCELLED**
Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area
November 23 Saturday 9:00 am Flora of Spur Cross(easy) Spur Cross ranges in elevation from 2400' in the Cave Creek drainage to over 3900' at the top of Elephant Mountain and contains a broad diversity of plantlife. Join us on this easy 2 hour hike through the Jewel of the Creek and lower Dragonfly Trail as we take a look at some of the common plants of the conservation area. (CANCELLED DUE TO FORECAST RAIN & POSSIBLE CREEK FLOODING)

Saturday Bird Walk - Usery Park
Usery Mountain Regional Park
How do you tell one brown bird from the next, and what are the first three items to look for as the little rascal flits off? Are you already a novice but interested in keeping a yearly, state or national bird list? Bird expert, Sandy Hornbaker, will talk about bird habitat, behavior, range, etc. as we go in search of the native birds in this area. Please bring binoculars, water, and closed-toe shoes. If needed, we have binoculars to borrow. Location: Nature Center.

But how ‘dangerous’ is the desert, really? Join Ranger Amy for a “hands-on” introduction to the unique flora and fauna that make up this place we call the Sonoran Desert. Meet at the North Trail Trailhead.

For those who completed our “Archery 101” class, this class will take you to the next level! Participants will learn about field target archery, discover how to improve their accuracy, and enjoy some friendly competition. Equipment will be provided. Participants must be graduates of our “Archery 101” class. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring water, hats, and closed-toe shoes. Meet at the Archery Range. 10 AM - Noon. Birding on the Trail - Lake Pleasant
Lake Pleasant Regional Park
Come join our volunteer naturalist Frank Meyerholtz as he takes you birding. Meet Frank at the north area of Lake Pleasant in the Cottonwood Day Use Area. Bring water and wear good hiking shoes. Don't forget your camera and binoculars. Bring your bird guides if you have them too. This hike is moderate and will last about two-hours.

Taste of the Desert - Visitor Center- McDowell Park
McDowell Mountain Regional Park
RSVP requested (but not required) for supply purposes. Would you believe that desert foods are not only nutritious, but can taste great, too? Drop in to the Nature Center on your way back from your hike, and try a homemade mesquite flour pancake topped with agave syrup, prickly pear pad salsa, or a cracker with prickly pear jelly. Small tastings will be served in our comfortable Visitor Center. This program is free with $6 per vehicle entry fee, but an rsvp is requested for program supplies.

Geocaching 101 - Spur Cross
Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area
November 23 Saturday 3:00 pm Geocaching 101 (easy) Geocaching is a fun activity where participants use a GPS receiver to locate hidden containers, called geocaches. Join Ranger Kevin and Docent Tom McGuire for a basic introduction to geocaching and the use of GPS receivers. After the demonstration, we will look for a few geocaches that are hidden within the conservation area. (Rain may cancel - check website one hour before start time...)

Sunset Hike - Estrella

Set off into the Sonoran Desert at sunset. Ranger Amy will guide you on this short loop 1-mile hike. We will leave from the Rainbow Trailhead. This short, non-intimidating hike is perfect for anyone who wants to try something new. Location: Rainbow Trailhead
