Frequently Asked Questions


Q. What is a Governing Board member?
A. A Governing Board member functions as one part of a board consisting of three to five members, making decisions and planning direction for the school district in accordance with State laws.

Q. What are the qualifications for becoming a Governing Board member?
A. A person who is a registered voter of this state and has been a resident of the school district for one year immediately preceding the day of election is eligible for election to the office of governing board member.

No employee of a school district or the spouse of such employee may hold membership on a governing board of a school district by which such employee is employed. A.R.S. § 15-421 Leaving MCSOS Site

Q. What duties/powers does a Governing Board member have?
A. The Governing Board shall prescribe and enforce policies and procedures for the governance of the schools, not inconsistent with law or rules prescribed by the state board of education. A.R.S. § 15-341 through § 15-350 (Article 3) Leaving MCSOS Site

Q. When are Governing Board elections held?
A. A regular election shall be held for each school district at the time and place, and in the manner, of general elections as provided in title 16. A.R.S. § 16-204 Leaving MCSOS Site

Q. How long is an elected Governing Board member’s term of office?
A. The term of office for an elected Governing board member is either two or four years as prescribed by the A.R.S. § 15-424. Leaving MCSOS Site

Q. When are Board meetings held?
A. For the purposes of regular meetings of the Governing Board, the board shall hold a regular meeting at least once each month during the regular school year and may hold other meetings as often as called.

The board shall meet at the most convenient public facility in the school district. If a public facility is not available within the district, the governing board may meet at any available public facility that is convenient to all governing board members, regardless of the county or school district in which the facility is located.
