Maricopa County Risk Management Occupational Safety & Health Division has been conducting it's Annual "Safety Bowl" competition since 1997. It is based on the TV show, "Jeopardy," where participants are asked safety-related questions and they need to give the correct answer to those questions.

The point amounts range from 10 points to 100 points in each category. The categories are:

• Hazardous Materials/Bloodborne Pathogens
• Office Safety
• Personal Protective Equipment
• Fall Protection/Confined Space
• Tool Safety
• Vehicles & Equipment
• General Safety
• Mystery Safety

Three to four teams, each made up of three members, compete for the "Safety Bowl" trophy. Each person who wants to be on their department's team must take a pre-test. The three highest pre-test scores make up the team. The team with the most points at the end of the competition wins the "Safety Bowl" trophy.

On the trophy are silver plaques with the Year, Department Name and the names of the team members who won that year's competition. MCDOT was also the winner of the 2001 Safety Bowl. Other winners include, Flood Control (3), Facilities Management (2) and Equipment Services (1).

In the future, we would like to see other County Departments, besides those in Public Works and Facilities Management, compete for this most coveted trophy.
