The Maricopa County Tobacco Use Prevention Program offers leadership, direction, education and support to all residents of Maricopa County and works collaboratively with our communities to create a tobacco-free environment.
In 1994, Arizona voters passed Proposition 200, which increased the state sales tax on tobacco products by $.58 per pack.
Funded solely by 23% of the Proposition 200 tax revenue, the Arizona Department of Health Services formed the Tobacco Prevention and Education Program (TEPP) in 1995.
The program’s goal is to provide tobacco education, prevention and research.
In March of 1997, TEPP launched Maricopa County’s Tobacco Use Prevention Program (MACTUPP).
The Maricopa County Tobacco Use Prevention Program consists of several teams that are actively working in your community.
The
Prevention Team works together with schools and community organizations to provide education on the risks and consequences of tobacco-use. The team is currently contracted with more than 425 schools in Maricopa County to provide a comprehensive tobacco prevention curriculum.
The
Cessation Team is focused on getting tobacco users the help they need to quit. The team offers free classes year-round throughout the county, using the latest research-based programs. The team also works with medical providers and businesses to increase awareness of our program and other resources to help tobacco users.
The
Secondhand Smoke Team works with national and local organizations to provide education on the dangers of secondhand smoke and options that are available to reduce exposure in the home and in the workplace. The team is part of AZHealthLinks, a free worksite wellness program designed to improve the health of employees and fight the onset of chronic disease.
The
Community Promotions Team is primarily focused on planning, coordinating, and implementing promotional activities which will enhance state and local tobacco control efforts. The team is active in the community spreading the anti-tobacco message at schools, health fairs, sporting events, and various other public events.
