Where is the STD Clinic located?
The STD Clinic is located in the Public Health Building at 1645 E. Roosevelt, Phoenix, AZ 85006. The building is just east of 16th Street, on Roosevelt. Ample parking is available in the front of the building.
Can I make an appointment?
The STD Clinic is a walk-in clinic, and no appointment is necessary. When you get a number from the receptionist, you will be given an estimated time that you will be seen.
Is all my information confidential?
Yes. All information about you and your visit will be kept strictly confidential. There will be no correspondence sent from the clinic to you, and there will be no telephone calls placed to you without your permission.
Where do I go when I get in the building?
On arrival, the receptionist at the front desk will ask you the reason for your visit. Based on the services you are requesting, you will be given a numbered ticket and directed to the registration area. Your number will be called and you will complete the registration process. Once your registration is completed, you will be directed to the STD Clinic waiting area.
How much does it cost to get tested and treated for an STD?
The fee of testing, examination and treatment (if needed) is $20 at the STD Clinic and will be requested at the time of registration.
What if I don't have the $20 to pay for testing?
You can check our calendar for sites where free testing is being conducted, or you can come into the clinic during normal business hours. No one will be turned away because of an inability to pay.
Why am I given a ticket with a number?
While you are receiving care at the Clinic, the staff will call you by the number on your ticket rather than your name. This is to protect your privacy and confidentiality.
Why are numbers not called in order?
Numbers are managed electronically by the system. Numbers are called in order based on the services that are being requested. Since we provide many different services throughout our clinics, at times it may appear that numbers are being called out of sequence.
What will happen during the clinic visit?
You will first be seen by a Medical Assistant who will draw your blood for testing. You will then see a medical provider (a physician, a Nurse Practitioner or a Physician's Assistant) who will take a sexual history, explain the exam procedure, perform a comprehensive STD exam, (for women this is a pelvic exam and not a pap smear) and give you any medication you may need, as well as information on any follow-up appointments.
How long will I have to wait to be tested?
When you get your number from the receptionist, most patients go through the registration process in 15 minutes or less. The time of the wait varies, depending on how busy the Clinic is, however, for most rapid service it is suggested that you come to the Clinic in the morning.
What are the busiest days and times at the clinic?
The STD Clinic is typically busiest on Monday and Friday. The busiest times are between the hours of 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The receptionist may stop giving out numbers to patients, or may stop giving numbers for a period of time during the day, if the maximum patient volume is reached. To increase the likelihood of being seen the same day, or if you require treatment, it is strongly recommended you arrive at the clinic between 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
I don't have time to wait. Is there another option for me?
Express testing services are offered for testing all STD's except Herpes. During the registration process, you will complete a short, confidential questionnaire. If you are not symptomatic and you are deemed to be at a lower risk for an STD or HIV infection, you will be offered the opportunity to be tested through express testing.
What can I get tested for?
The STD Clinic can test you for most STD infections, including Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Syphilis, and HIV. The Clinic does NOT currently offer testing for herpes.
HIV testing is offered in the STD Clinic only in conjunction with STD testing. HIV testing is not offered in the STD Clinic separate from other STD testing. In addition, the rapid HIV test is only offered if patient's meet the criteria for "high risk."
What if I am diagnosed with an STD?
You will be provided with treatment if you are diagnosed with an STD. You may also be referred to another staff member for enhanced counseling, including a discussion on how to talk to your sexual partners about their exposure to an STD and how to prevent new infections.
What if I get tested and I don't have an STD, but I have another medical problem?
The STD Clinic provides testing and treatment for STD infections. If the tests or examination reveal another medical problem, you will be referred to your primary care physician. If you do not have a primary care physician, we can provide you with a list of clinics and physicians where you can get further care and treatment.
How do I get the results of my STD and HIV tests?
After your visit, you will be provided with a phone number to call where you can get your test results. You may call the number Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. To ensure patient confidentiality, you will be asked to verify some personal information before your results will be given over the phone.
What if I want a copy of my STD test results?
You can request a free copy of your test results from our Medical Records Unit by completing a Release of Information form, available from the receptionist. Copies of test results are provided Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A photo ID will be required to obtain copies of your test results. To maintain patient confidentiality, copies of test results will only be given if the name and date of birth that you gave during the initial registration process matches exactly with the name and date of birth on your photo ID.
What if I lose my medication?
If you lose your medication, you will need to go through the registration process and you will be requested to pay for the visit. Medications will not be refilled through the express testing process.
Can I bring my children with me?
Due to the nature and subject matter, patients are strongly encouraged not to bring children with them to their clinic visit. Children cannot be left unattended in the waiting area.
