A refugee is a person who has been driven from his/her country because it is not safe for him/her to stay. Refugees are legally defined as people who are forced to leave their country because of persecution, or a well founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.

Refugee resettlement, in which the United States, Canada, and Australia and other countries participate, assists only 2-3% of displaced persons worldwide.

Refugees resettled in Maricopa County are scheduled for health screening, and the refugee is tested for communicable illness and conditions, including tuberculosis and HIV.
