Uno Por Uno
Uno por Uno is an outreach program designed to directly affect pets, families and neighborhoods, one by one with free or low-cost spay/neuter services, vaccination clinics, license clinics and pet selection/behavior education on a frequent and repetitive basis throughout the campaign period. Enforcement through the capture of stray animals, enforcing the leash law and teaching bite prevention are also emphasized.
MCACC believes that a more proactive and creative approach is needed to safeguard public health and safety. As such, MCACC has changed the culture of pet ownership in Maricopa County through initiatives like Uno por Uno, providing direct services and educating pet owners one-on-one about responsible pet ownership, spaying and neutering, the leash law, the importance of pet vaccinations and pet licensing.
In January and February of 2007, MCACC identified the 85040 area as a “hot spot,” lacking veterinary, animal control and pet education services. 21 percent of the population’s dogs ran uncontrolled; 92 percent of the dogs were unlicensed and the area reported a higher-than-average number of dog bites. Consequent impoundments leading to euthanasia was the sad reality in many cases. During Uno Por Uno, MCACC exceeded its goal for the area with 286 spay/neuter surgeries, 1,821 rabies vaccinations and over 2,000 licenses were registered.
MCACC intends to expand the Uno por Uno campaign efforts in 2007-2008, targeting new “hot spot” neighborhoods.
