Prevention and Avoidance

Pet Owners

It is your responsibility to ensure your dog does not bite. Following are some suggestions to help your dog be a good citizen:
  • Spay or neuter your dog. It reduces the urge to roam and fight.
  • Socialize your dog. Introduce your dog to new people and different social situations.
  • Train your dog to be obedient. Attend a training class so you both know what to do.
  • Don’t encourage aggressive behavior, even during play.

Community Members

Dogs can be fearful of unfamiliar things and situations they perceive to be threatening. Following are some situations to be aware of:
  • Injured dogs may bite out of fear.
  • A mother dog may bite to protect her pups.
  • Never run away from a dog. Their instinct will be to chase you.
  • Make sure a dog sees you before you pet him.
  • Do not take food or toys away from a dog.
  • Do not force a dog to sit or remove him from his bed.
  • Do not try to break up a dog fight.
  • Ask permission before approaching a dog you don’t know.
