Welcome to the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner staff is here to serve the citizens of Maricopa County discharging one of the most fundamental functions of government. In this state of the art facility, a talented and dedicated staff of highly trained physicians makes public inquiry into sudden and unnatural deaths in order to protect the living from an untimely death. Our duties take us from the frontiers of detection of obscure and emerging diseases to the courts, providing expert testimony in both criminal and civil proceedings.
The office is an independent office separate from law enforcement or prosecution, although we work with multiple law enforcement agencies, the FBI and various Native American agencies during our investigations, as well as meeting with attorneys from the county attorney, federal prosecutors and public defender's offices in pretrial review of death cases. This office is also actively engaged in training of medical students and resident physicians and is a training laboratory for Northern Arizona University undergraduate students majoring in forensic chemistry.
This office continually strives to excel in its mandate to investigate deaths and protect the citizens of this, one of the largest and most rapidly growing populations in the entire nation.
