Work zone safety is in your hands

Work Zone

MCDOT reminds drivers to put “Safety First” when driving in work zones. MCDOT recognizes April 3 – 7 as National Work Zone Awareness Week as an opportunity to emphasize the importance of driving safely in work zones.

To avoid work zone crashes, drivers are encouraged to:

  • Stay Alert and Minimize Distractions: Pay attention to the road and avoid distractions while behind the wheel. Make sure you are focused on the road ahead of you, not on other things in the car such as the radio or your cell phone.
  • Merge into the Proper Lane:  Merge well before you reach a lane restriction and be aware as traffic patterns can change daily. Make sure to change lanes only where permitted and only where pavement markings indicate.
  • Don’t tailgate: Make sure there is sufficient space between you and the cars ahead while traveling.
  • Obey the Posted Speed Limit: Workers may be just a few feet away from your car. Be prepared to slow down further if conditions indicate the need. Also, fines may be doubled for moving traffic violations within work zones.
  • Follow Instructions from Flaggers and Be Patient: Everyone wants to get where they’re going faster, but be mindful of driving conditions to make sure you arrive safely.

This year's national theme is "Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands" which reinforces the importance of drivers being mindful of situations around them and to always be alert while driving.

On April 5, MCDOT employees will participate in ‘Go Orange Day’ by wearing orange to raise awareness of work zone safety practices. MCDOT encourages everyone to wear orange, take a photo and then post it to social media using the hashtag #MCDOTSafetyFirst.

By raising awareness of work zone safety, residents can help accidents from occurring.
